The Prose Poll is a weekly update of the PeteProse Power Rankings for the 2009-2010 College Basketball Season.
| 1 | Kansas (25-1) | Same | With all of the movement in the past week of the top 10 teams, Kansas was the only team to remain in their spot – it just so happens that it’s the most comfortable of them all at number one. Kansas handled Iowa State and held off Texas A&M to remain unbeaten in conference play and atop the college basketball world. |
| 2 | Kentucky (25-1) | +1 | The Wildcats defeated Tennessee with a surge late in the second half then clanged on to a W against Mississippi State in overtime. With the losses to Syracuse and Villanova, Kentucky moved back up to number two. |
| 3 | Purdue (21-3) | +2 | Purdue hasn’t looked back after the three back-to-back-to-back losses at the beginning of conference play. They’ve bounced back with seven wins in a row behind E’Twaun Moore, Robbie Hummel and JaJuan Johnson’s outstanding play. They play Ohio State tonight at 630 ET on ESPN, so tune in to what should be a great Big Ten game. |
| 4 | Syracuse (24-2) | -2 | The ‘Cuse suffered its first loss after 11 straight wins Sunday against the Cardinals from Louisville. Syracuse looks to rebound tomorrow against a top tier Georgetown team. |
| 5 | Kansas State (20-4) | +2 | Kansas State finds itself placed at number five with the recent struggles of Villanova. KSU sits at number two in the Big 12 behind the Jayhawks of Kansas. Kansas State looks to pick up another home conference win tonight against Nebraska. |
| 6 | Villanova (22-3) | -2 | Villanova suffered a bad loss against a bad Connecticut team Monday. The loss was the Cats second in four games. Villanova will need to bounce back against a solid Pittsburgh team Saturday in order to stay in the hunt for the number one seed. |
| 7 | Duke (21-4) | +2 | Duke defeated UNC in an always close game then went on to hand Maryland a 21 point loss. The Blue Devils play Miami tonight then Virginia Tech Saturday in a game that will help shape out the ACC. |
| 8 | Gonzaga (21-4) | +2 | The Zags continued its path of dominance in the WCC with a win over 2nd place Saint Mary’s and another win over San Diego. The Bulldogs look like a top tier team with four players averaging in double figures. |
| 9 | Ohio State (20-6) | First time in top 10 | The Buckeyes have ripped off 9 wins in their last 10 tries behind the stellar play of Evan Turner. With Turner’s return to full form Ohio State seems to be one of the best teams in the nation. They face Purdue tonight in what could be a statement win for the Buckeyes if they can pull out the victory. |
| 10 | West Virginia (19-5) | -2 | Yeah, Yeah… I know. West Virginia has dropped its last two ballgames – but that doesn’t take the Mountaineers out of the top 10. It lost respectably to a top notch Villanova team then barely lost in a triple overtime thriller against AP ranked #21 Pittsburgh. The Mountaineers (until further losses prove to me) will remain in the top 10 at #10 on our list. |
Honorable Mentions: New Mexico, Georgetown, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Texas, BYU, Vanderbilt, Butler, Tennessee, Pittsburgh
Curiously, do you feel Gonzaga is the 8th best team in the nation? I’d be very hard-pressed to put them in my top 25.
wins: Wisconsin, Cincinnati, Davidson, Oklahoma, Illinois, Memphis, and Saint Mary’s twice
losses: Michigan State, Wake Forest, Duke, San Fransisco (only bad loss)
I don’t see how you can not have them in the top 25? With Georgetown and Michigan State dropping recently, they slipped in even if it’s only for a week. Only other team you can argue that deserves to be in there is Butler or BYU.
Well, bviously they deserve to be at least ~top 15 polls-wise, however I was asking about personal preferences to bring up conversation.
The few times I’ve got a chance to catch their games this year, I didn’t feel like they’re *CLOSE* to the the eighth best team in the nation, but I can certainly see the justification based upon their record and a few of their wins on neutral courts.
In all honesty rankings are all about who deserves what spot, regardless of whether or not Gonzaga is the eight best team in the nation, they deserve the spot.
They’ll probably grab a 4 seed or so come tourney time, but they’re definitely a team prone to be upset. Their bench is extremely thin.
Yeah that was my whole point. Their ranking is justified, but I feel like they’re extremely prone to upset and fall short talent-wise of MANY teams from the powerhouse majors.
