Varez Ward, the starting guard for the Texas Longhorns, has a ruptured quadriceps and will be out for the season. Ward suffered the injury during layup drills before Tuesday’s victory over the University of Pittsburgh.
According to the statement, he is expected to have surgery next week. Ward had averaged 6 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals through the first three games of the season.
His replacement, freshman J’Covan Brown, stepped in on Tuesday and scored 12 points along with 2 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal. Coach Rick Barnes had been shuffling his starting rotation and Brown is averaging 21 minutes a game already.
The outlook for the rest of the season shouldn’t dramatically shift, but it hurts the Longhorns depth.
