Mauer is Most Valuable

The American League revealed its Most Valuable Player on Monday afternoon after the voting tally from the BBWAA showed a dominant victory for Twins’ catcher Joe Mauer. Mauer received 27 out of a possible 28 first place votes. Detroit Tigers’ third baseman Miguel Cabrera got a first place vote. How? I have absolutely no idea.

Joe Mauer had a truly remarkable season. He displayed tremendous power in comparison to years prior. Below are a few highlights from Mauer’s memorable season:

  • Mauer is then first catcher to ever win the sabermetric triple crown (AVG/OBP/SLG)
  • Won his third batting title (no catcher has ever won more than one)
  • He more than tripled his homerun (from 9 to 28) despite fewer at-bats
  • First catcher to win the MVP since Ivan Rodriguez in 1999
  • Led the Twins to a playoff birth this season despite missing Justin Morneau for the latter half of the season

The Yankees’ Mark Teixeira and Derek Jeter finished second and third in the voting, respectively. Miguel Cabrera was fourth and Kendry Morales finished fifth. We find out who wins the National League MVP tomorrow afternoon. Here’s to hoping that the BBWAA continues to get the voting done the right way. So far so good guys.
